Chapter. 9 Discussion

Q Your answer should be from a sociological point of view, not your personal opinion. I am grading for understanding. Meritocracy or the "ideal system based on the belief that social stratification is the result of personal effort—or merit—that determines social standing (Ch.9)" is what most of us are socialized to understand our class backgrounds and the class structure of our society. Sociologists argue that social stratification in terms of class is not solely based on meritocracy. Explain your understanding of why individual effort doesn't fully explain why some people belong to the upper, middle, and working classes. Please respond to two classmates. 200 word minimum I will provide feedback and a grade within one week of the due date. Sociologists refer to the system of social standing as social stratification. Social stratification is the classification of members of a society into socio-economic status based on factors such as wealth, race, income, education, and power. Sociologists, on the other hand, understand that social stratification is a societal-wide structure that highlights inequities (Keirns, Strayer, Griffiths, Vyain, Bry, Cody-Rydzewski, & Sadler, 2015). While disparities between individuals will always exist, sociologists are interested in wider societal trends.
